Excerpt from Jessika Yamaguchi’s diary, June 27, 2003

I’m not about to tell my parents this, but I may have to take back what I said about this camp being an awful place. I think I’ve finally made a friend. Okay, let’s be honest. She may not think of me as a friend so much as a convenient cabinmate who knows how to pick a lock with a bobby pin, but I’m not splitting hairs over that. Anyway, it’s the beginning of a good friendship, right? Mutual respect.

It was Alexis--not who I anticipated would befriend me, what with her asthma and all. But she may be a nerd too, just of a different flavor than me. She was going on and on when we were walking back from the nurses’ station about how she really wanted to be able to get into the filing cab...
