The fire had long ago died, and the song of the ocean had lulled Delia to sleep. Some hours later, she was awoken by a scraping sound. She was sure it had come from inside the cabin, but how? She had locked every door and ensured no one was inside before she had allowed herself to sleep. She wasn’t quite sure what to do next. If someone was inside, it was already too late. Why bother inspecting if it would only lead her to her death? She stayed put and checked her phone. It didn’t surprise her that there was barely any reception. They were deep in the forest, and she had been told only one network provider got full service there. It wasn’t hers.
