 For most people when they hear the words polar bear they think of a massive white flesh eating beast that roams the northern tundra. For a scout master and his troop a polar bear has an entirely different meaning. It for those that don't know is the one weekend a year when scouts can spend twenty four hours in cold weather conditions. The temperature cannot exceed thirty-two degrees and while in the frozen wilderness scouts hone their winter survival skills.

More important, a scout can earn a patch that signifies they indeed spent that time in the frosty wild and survived. A patch that as a scout master I feel you should know doesn't even get worn on the uniform. That's right, this patch is just to collect, not even functional! Symbolic yes, functional no!
