The sun felt warm on his face. Had it not been for the light northerly wind, there would have been no need for over garments. He looked at his wife, lying next to him in the field, stroking her swollen stomach. Soon it would be time. He prayed to the gods then and there for a son to be safely delivered. The woman he had come to know and love as his univira turned and looked at him.
‘Do you remember this day, Germanus? The day all those years ago when we sat here looking out to sea and planned our future together?’
Germanus nodded.
‘I do. But why am I back here now?’
‘Because I want you to remember what you said to me that day’.
‘What I said to you? What did I say? I cannot remember’.
