Elafius thought it ironic that here he was asking the advice of a dirty, smelly little waif. But then he reminded himself that even Barita was a child of God. Suffer the little children to come unto me!

Elafius laughed at Barita’s use of the word “starters”. There were times when he found her British accent so thick and her phraseology so quaint that she was almost impossible to understand what she was saying. But he had grown to be fond of her, not only because of her awful life story, but also because of the wisdom beyond her years that she obviously possessed. She had far more nous than most adults he had encountered.
