Elafius prayed to God like he had never prayed before. Barita stood in front of him, clutched his robes and hung onto his pectoral cross. The image grew brighter and larger with every gasp the two of them took.

‘What will happen to us, Elafius? Are we going to die?’

‘I do not know. Have faith, little one. If this is our last day on earth, then so be it. God will protect us. Let us pray together, Barita’.

‘But I do not know how to pray’.

‘Then I will teach you. Say these words after me. Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Go on, say them!’
