Elafius was relieved in a strange kind of way to be greeted by Barita. It seemed more than a little incongruous that Germanus’s little waif was in the tunnels underneath the Temple of Albanus. The young priest smiled to himself as he followed Barita to where the supposed treasure lay. He noticed that the noises above had abated as he and his small band of men went ever further into the dark caverns.

 Barita seemed to know where she was going, despite the lack of light.

‘Have you been here before, little one?’

‘Several times, Elafius’.

‘How so?’

Barita laughed.

‘I was shown these passages by my master’.

‘Your master?’

‘Yes. My Lord Germanus’.

Elafius gasped.
