Ambrosius kept telling himself that he must keep going. The effect on the troops if he fell now would be incalculable. But it was hard. The loss of an eye had made him less of a fighter in the way that his castration had taken away his manhood.

But now there was an opportunity for Ambrosius to avenge all the wrongs that the Vortigern had done to him and his people. Once again, he could be a man in the eyes of his people and his Queen. He would be able to hold his head up again as the King of the West Britons.
