The two armies engaged straight away. Germanus led the West British forces from the front. Though depleted thanks to Lupus’s rush of blood to the head (he and the remainder of his forces were still holed up around the citadel and immediately in front of the Temple of Albanus), the General was still able to command an impressive fighting force. Ambrosius and Aureliana had both expressed concern at the disparity between their army and the Vortigern’s significantly greater numbers, but as Germanus kept reminding his colleagues, the Saxoni did not have any cavalry and this gave the West British a distinct advantage, even though the Vortigern did have a small number of equites.
