Pelagius had never seen the Vortigern like this before: not in all the time they had been together. The priest had seized his opportunity once the Vortigern had come to power. If the new religion was to flourish, then a power base was needed. And Pelagius saw the ideal compatriot in the Vortigern. They did not like each other, especially; but that was of no consequence. As long as this earthly ruler held power in Britannia, then Pelagius could spread the word, and not just to the four corners of the old province, but beyond it, once the combined armies were on the march towards Roma and the Vortigern took the purple: him as Imperator; Pelagius as Pontifex. Pontifex Maximus!  With the whole ecclesiastical apparatus at his beck and call.

But what if the Vortigern lost? Then what? Could Pelagiu...
