Staring at the small human girl, Gilin didn’t know what to think. She can’t be looking at me! She’s looking at something nearby.

    He didn’t move a muscle, afraid he might make a sound or cause a leaf or flower to move and she’d somehow detect him. Nonetheless, she continued gazing directly at him, and soon knelt down as if to have a closer look. With lifelong training, the frightened Gilin stood motionless, uttering not a sound.

    “Why are you standing so still?” asked the girl. “What’s your name?”
