Chapter 23

Diliani first noticed that Faralan had broken rank and was heading downward, then that he was riderless. Gazing down, to her horror she saw Talli tumbling earthward.

    “Talli!” screamed Diliani, plunging her ilon downward. Seeing what was happening, the others dove also. Faralan chased his mistress as fast as he could, but within moments she struck the ground.

    Touching down next to her, Diliani leapt from Manay and kneeled by her side. “Talli!” she cried, but the fallen girl, lying face down, did not move or make a sound.

    Speckarin landed, then Hut, and they were immediately at her side. “Is she breathing?” asked Hut. “Will she be all right?”

    The magician observed her close...
