“No one’s to blame,” said Speckarin, trying desperately to remain calm and think clearly. But one of his charges was gone, and the thought of it was like an icy wind blowing through his heart.

    Diliani was distraught. Flying behind Gilin, she had considered it her responsibility to keep his ilon in sight. “It must have been when I saw these trees,” she said, her voice quivering, “and pointed them out to you. I was distracted and didn’t keep track of Loana.”

    Talli was pale and quiet, deeply worried about her dear companion.
