Chapter 13

The events of the next few moments occurred so quickly and were so disturbing that to this day they are discussed and debated by kirins who were there, and even some who weren’t. Witnesses observed the attack from a variety of vantage points. They agree that the third gronom jumped down and alighted next to Gilin. What happened next is where disagreement begins, and the truth may never be known.

    “Gilin froze in terror,” is one view.

    “He tried to flee,” is another.

    “He fought the monster,” is yet another.

    A second bone of contention is what the creature did.

    “It reached out a claw and touched him on the shoulder,” say some.
