Chapter 8

Hut was stunned. The hunger he had felt in his stomach was replaced by pangs of fear. Yesterday, he thought, I was sad about riding Stala for a last time and excited about flying on a raven. At last night’s gathering, the clan ate the morels Berin and I found, and we told them about our confrontation with humans. All that seems insignificant after what I’m being told by my cousin.

    “If you like,” said Gilin, “I’ll take you home. You needn’t become any more involved.”

    Hut smiled inwardly. A little while ago I wanted to be home. I was hungry. Now I wonder how my cousin would do without me. He came for help. He was alone, isolated from almost everyone because of his secrets.
