Chapter 50

With the shock of their narrow escape still fresh, Ruggum and Gilin flew silently away from the setting sun, instinctively moving eastward, sad about the way things had ended. They were disturbed by the gang’s behavior, causing a skirmish and forced departure, pressing Loana into action long before intended. They didn’t have time to say proper farewells and thank Christopher and his grandfather for everything, and were confused and disappointed by Nathan. He had shot Loana at the beginning, and brought other humans in the end, but in the interim was cordial and helpful.

    Observing Loana now, Ruggum was relieved and grateful indeed. She’s flying normally, he thought, beating the damaged wing with the same power and grace as the opposite one, as if nothing happened....
