The next day was again uneventful as the party moved east, widening the gap between themselves and their last haven, the Shillitoe cave. In the evening they found a place to rest and spread out into trees near one another.

    Talli fell asleep early, but awoke after midnight and was restless. Wanting to try the ring again but knowing how she’d feel when she failed, she held off, not allowing herself to even look at it, though the moon was high in a clear sky.
