Half-seriously, half-playfully, she held it up to the sky, as she had many times previously. The evening was soft and warm. The heavens were clear, dotted with glimmering stars, but the moon hadn’t yet arisen. Soon getting sleepy, she put the ring back on her toe, then closed her eyes and drifted into slumber.
Awakened by the screech of an owl, her eyes were closing again when she noted the moon was high. Knowing her chances of finding Gilin were slim, she took the ring off, gripped it in both hands, looked at the moon through it, and concentrated on him.
