John Versteeg eyed Gilin, who stood near the end of the workbench, and peered at the space he was pointing to, but could see nothing.

    “I’d like to meet your companion,” said the old man, cleansing the injured wing. But confused enough by the whole affair, he turned away from the introduction as though it hadn’t happened and went on with his work.

    “If you’re not certain how to handle Loana’s injuries,” said Gilin, clutching the calamar, “Ruggum Chamter is and can help.”

    “Who’s Ruggum . . . Chamter?” asked Nathan, he and his brother observing wide-eyed.
