Chapter 30

“We’ve waited a long time for this day, haven’t we, Chris?” said the old man.

    Wearing khaki hiking clothes and carrying a parcel, Grandpa Versteeg was negotiating the path with a decided limp. Shrapnel wounds suffered more than forty years ago at war had caused his knee to become stiff and painful, and it was getting worse with age. He could no longer hike through the woods the way he used to, curtailing one of his greatest pleasures.

    But today marked a special occasion. He would pass along to his second grandson some of his knowledge of guns and game hunting. There would also be a surprise, and he was enjoying the occasion so much he had almost forgotten about his leg.
