The first thing she noticed was the rocking. It was all part of a memory dream: Mother's spirits had lifted a bit after months of mourning, and she had taken Frankie, twin brother Peter and younger brother Jack out for a simple day voyage on Lake Erie. Peter and Jack were competing to see who could catch the biggest fish. It seemed like half of the deck was covered in perch, walleye and smallmouth bass, all flopping and slapping around.

"I think I hooked a steelhead!" Jack said excitedly as something strong fought his line. "Yep! Steelhead!"

"I hate you," said Peter, tossing his fishing rod away, a handcrafted bronze and cherry-wood antique that Great-Grandfather van Helsing got from his father Abraham near the turn of the twentieth century.
