"Traumatic" was a light way to put Safa's death.

She was tortured nearly to the point of insanity. All that saved her mind from breaking was the terrible fact that one of the priests had literally broken her mind by using a metal rod to spear her living brain. Thankfully, this ended her mortal suffering.

What came next, though, was worse.

Safa was never certain if the afterlife she came into contact with was actually real. Many of the stories she'd read and first-hand witnesses she'd interviewed over the years regarding so-called near-death experiences were ultimately explainable by science.
