Blake walked along the cobble stone path and tried to think about anything but magic, but it was proving hard. The neighborhood she had lived in her whole life came to life at night.

It was indeed filled with mortals and the non practicing magic folk, but at night time there was a written rule that magic was allowed, that's why her schooling began at sundown. There were houses dotted along the path she took every night to school, and in between each house was a hidden house, only those who were privy to the magic world could see them. That's how the magic world stayed a secret for the most part, except when mortals needed something from a witch.
