Chapter Thirty-Four Mother Knows Best?

—William Pitt Linda Kay McFarlin dropped out of the public high
school in Kendallville, Indiana, when she was sixteen.
Kendallville is a town of about 8,000 people, located twen- ty-five miles away from Fort Wayne, and tucked into the far northeast corner of Indiana, about a half-hour drive from either Ohio or Michigan. Linda was an average student and was never kept behind at school. But she was bored, so she left the DeKalb County High School and found a job to support herself.
It was then that she met Leo Sparkman. They fell in love and married after a short engagement. She was only seventeen when they married, and he was barely a year older.
