was especially loathsome. For much of the twentieth century, the Supreme Court has struggled without success to define pornography and to exclude it from First Amendment protection. Every decade the Court tinkers with its definition, as it has done again this year. Justice Douglas opposed all of these definitions and felt that until there was a constitutional amendment concerning the regulation of pornography, the court should not become the censor of last resort. Justice Stewart, although opposing “hardcore pornography,” felt that the worst Supreme Court decision during his tenure was the
Ginzburg censorship case. Many other “obscenity” cases could have also been included.
