breath catch in his throat at the sight of the woman before him, “I desire only a few minutes of your time to talk alone.”

Kitty looked torn before, at last, she nodded and guided him into the room at the back of the shop and up a flight of stairs that led to the flat above. She showed him into the living room and closed the door, leaning against it so that no one could enter, but maintaining her hold on the handle so that she might leave quickly.

“Why are you here, Henry?” she asked softly, watching as he removed his hat and lowered his head, reluctant to meet her gaze for a time.

“I had to ensure that you knew,” he faltered before he stared across at her. “That you knew my uncle wrote only of his own feelings and not mine.”
