waiting as the minutes ticked by, Lieutenant Portland finally appeared and smiled across at Fotherby who returned the gesture with uncertainty. He could not escape the words that Peters had shared with him and he hated both Peters for causing doubt in his mind and himself for allowing the older man to do so. Unaware of this personal battle that Fotherby was fighting within himself, Portland placed his hand on the other man’s arm.

“I hope you can do something for him, Fotherby. I am close to allowing the men to announce that poor Cullington is possessed.”

“No man is possessed,” Fotherby remarked. “Only possessed by their own haunting memories and fears.”

“And how do you cure a man of such an ailment?”

“We shall find out,” Fotherby replie...
