Beth’s eyes flutter in her sleep. Tom has gone to the hotel room to shower and eat something and  promised he’d return. She wakes up every so often, clutching at the thin hospital sheets. For a few moments she panics but then remembers everything that’s happened and settles back into her bed, and into feverish dreams. 

She’s in the middle of a nightmare. She’s back at the apartment, the last one before the county came and took her and Laurel away. They’d been in the group home for a little while before a distant relative of their father’s had come for them. Aunt Sevila. But now she’s reliving the time before Sevila had saved their lives. The kitchen counters are sticky and filthy, if she doesn’t clean them, they’ll never be cleaned; and if CPS...
