After Beth hung up on me, I was numb all over. I sat there gripping the phone to my ear. I don’t know how long I was there, just listening to the hum of the dial tone. I finally hung up, wiped my sweaty palms on my clothes, and went to bed.

I dreamed Beth’s rage. I was leaning against a cobalt blue thunderbird, while she stood on the side of the highway, her face to a darkening sky.  Her arms were spread open, as she sang a familiar but ancient tune. It was the song of the Summoning. Our mother had taught it to us, as her mother had taught it to her, and so on, all the way to the beginning of time, to the first daughter, and the first mother of our line. “What are we?” Beth screamed in my terrified direction.
