I arrived in Ruidoso, New Mexico five days later. At first, I had taken the highway and driven at random. You see, I wasn’t fully convinced that I was really going to disappear, or whether I’d just keep driving until I ended back at Beth’s house. I spent a few days at a motel somewhere in between. The woman behind the manager’s desk, eyed me carefully as she handed me my keys. I resisted the urge to smile and make her like me. Instead, I looked her in the eyes until she looked away.
