The water in the bath was on, but we could hear her sobs over the running water. Beth knocked on the door, and asked her if she was alright.  She assured us that she was, but something had been broken in her after that night. Beth and I went everywhere with her after that. Not that it helped. However much we wanted, we didn't have the power to save her from the darkness that had already swallowed her.

I think back on this memory with new meaning, I remember my torn dress from the man on the road, and find myself crying for my mother. I pull out a picture from the bottom of my suitcase.
