I found the mouse stuck to a glue trap that I set out yesterday. I don’t know why I thought it would be much bigger. The poor thing is dead, but I could hear it last night, screaming for salvation. I was too scared to help it.  Now I am throwing the trap away in the garbage, as if its life had meant nothing.  I dialed Peter’s number afterwards, and a woman answered the phone. I should have expected that. Even her voice sounded new. As if nothing in this cruel world had infected her yet with its bitterness, and sadness.  I hung up on her, and proceeded to make myself some breakfast.
