The featureless blobs on the shore are developing faces and I keep paddling even though with every stroke I feel more terrified. Even though Levi is a jackass, I feel like I can understand him. He may have only lived in the future for ten years, but he’ll never be able to leave that part of him behind. I find that oddly comforting, despite the fact that in other circumstances I would have no trouble kicking his ass.
The people who are watching us come closer and closer now seem almost like a different species to me. A small voice in my mind reminds me that this is actually my time. That I was born not far from here, and had things gone differently I might be a member of this village.
