Kateri takes a cloth and uses it to wash the blood away from the cut at Lucy’s hairline. It doesn’t seem to be deep and I hope for her sake it doesn’t leave a scar. She doesn’t need the reminder.

The door flaps open and Levi is back. “It’s time to go.”

I look around but there’s nothing for me to take with me, other than Lucy. Kateri stands and I look up.

“Is it safe to carry her?”

“Yes, she’ll reach the village, but don’t move her around too much. My grandmother will know what to do. Talk as little as possible and keep to yourself. It’s the safest way.”

“I understand.”
