I went straight to Mrs Harper and had her call Sally. I was appalled at myself for allowing her to spend several days unnecessarily wondering what would happen too her. I felt even worse when she came. There were dark circles under her eyes and she looked exhausted.  I decided not to mention that I'd forgotten about her. 

 'Sally, I have some good news for you. His lordship has agreed to send you to Scotland. There is a vacant gate-lodge at Pitculich and you may take up the position of gatekeeper there if you wish. It seems the most suitable post since it's not arduous and you will be able to remain in your own home with the baby.'
