Having seen enough, I backed away slowly until I was sure I was out of sight, then turned and hurried back to the castle. I was nearly out of the woods altogether before I could no longer hear Lucas shouting at the doctor to be more careful. I found that I pitied him, in a disgusted way. He hadn't set out to be a bad man. But, both a physical and moral coward, he had not the strength to check his wrong impulses, nor the self awareness to see them for what they were. Hardley was his exact opposite. He knew exactly what he was doing, but not even his worst enemy could say he was a coward. And he could control himself.
