 Having seen enough, I backed away slowly until I was sure I was out of sight, then turned and hurried back to the castle. I was nearly out of the woods altogether before I could no longer hear Lucas shouting at the doctor to be more careful. I found that I pitied him, in a disgusted way. He hadn't set out to be a bad man. But, both a physical and moral coward, he had not the strength to check his wrong impulses, nor the self awareness to see them for what they were.
