'You were saying that she became desperate,' I repeated, gently.
'Yes. At least, she must have been. If only she'd looked out first, for I was right on their tail!'

'She jumped out of the carriage.'
I stifled an exclamation.
'Yes. She must have thought that it was a good moment, the carriage having slowed down because wet weather had made that section of the road difficult and boggy.'
'And wasn't it a good moment?'
'No,' he said, closing his eyes briefly. 'The light was fading and visibility was poor anyway,...
