I was unsettled for the rest of the day and it came as no surprise when I found that I was unable to fall asleep quickly that night. But it did come as a complete shock when I heard footsteps outside my door again. Surely Sally would not dare now to try and take anything? It must just be someone else who couldn't sleep. I was puzzled but, since I was no longer frightened, and to make certain of what was happening, I rose and opened the door. 

 'Louisa! What on earth are you doing?' Increasingly amazed, I took in her guilty countenance, the fact that she was fully dressed, and that she was carrying a bandbox.

 'Well? What are you about?'

 'Don't wake everyone, Lydia, there's a dear,' she pleaded. 'I'm running away!'
