I tried to seek out my husband for a private tete-a-tete the entire afternoon but he was nowhere to be found. I could almost suppose that he was avoiding me. I could understand why he should wish to put off the explanations due to me, but it was extremely irritating when I was positively expiring with curiosity. It also meant that I spent the entire day wondering around the house and the demesne. This was inconvenient as I wished to pay a call on Mrs Hamilton to ascertain whether Lucas had left and how much she knew of the affair.
