Remembering Mrs Hamilton's exquisite clothes, I took especial care with my toilette. When Bridget was done I was attired in a white and blue spotted muslim, with a blue bonnet and pelisse. The neckline was rather daring, but I knew Mrs Hamilton would not be shocked. And if Lucas was indeed present, I didn't want him to think my marriage had affected my looks unfavourably, as he had the last time he'd set eyes on me.

 I set off as soon as my morning chores were over. I expected either Hardley or Mr Garth to overtake me, nor was I disappointed. I heard footsteps behind me soon after setting off and stopped to let them catch up.

 'You must get out of this habit of walking and riding without a groom, Lydia.'
