I went down to dinner in a sombre mood, only slightly alleviated by the fact I was wearing my new emerald crepe, perfectly setting off the real emerald set that adorned my neck, ears and wrists. It really was too much for a family dinner but I couldn't resist. Hardley, at least, seemed surprised and slightly disapproving.
'Do you mean to wear all your jewels before your ball, m'dear? You will have nothing to wear on the day.'
'I know I'm very fine. But there are so many and I just can't wait to try them out.'
'When I was first married,' interposed Cecily, 'I spent an entire afternoon trying on all the Hardley jewels. Men never understand. But we don't grow tired of them, Robert. By the way, I have not yet seen your betrothal gift...
