I went straight up to my bedchamber for some time to myself and to change for dinner. There was no new note, which was a welcome surprise. Instead, there was Louisa, sat on my bed, crying her eyes out.
'Louisa! Whatever's the matter?'
She looked up. Then, to my great surprise, she stood, picked up a vase and threw it against the wall. I was shocked into silence. Louisa threw me a defiant look and then stamped on the pieces. I put a great deal of effort into not laughing. It was just so melodramatic.
'Have I offended you, Louisa?’
'You! No indeed. Why would I be offended with you?'
I sat down. I felt unequal to this conversation otherwise.
'Then what has occurred to make you so angry?'
