'We must have all our neighbours, of course. They have all been so civil about calling on you.'

 'Yes, indeed,' I agreed, making some notes. 'By the way, I hope that you will take me soon to return their calls.'

 'Certainly. Tomorrow is Sunday of course, but we will go on Monday.'

 'Thank you. Now, this is where I really need your help. Who else should I invite?'

 'Well, dear, I think it would be only civil to invite Mr and Mrs Parvett. They are not immediate neighbours but they have always been very kind. They're good friends.'

 I noted them down. At that point, Louisa entered the room.

 'So this is where you are hiding! How charmingly you look this morning, Lydia! What are you both up to?'...
