In the morning I awoke with a new thought. How had Hardley known where to deliver the note? I'd said nothing about it. But he'd said he would deliver it and I believed him. I also believed that he knew exactly where Lucas would be waiting. But how? Unless Lucas was not here at all! Were the notes actually from Hardley himself? Some kind of test? It would certainly explain how they came to be in my room without the knowledge of Bridget. But if so, had I passed by asking Lucas to leave, or had I failed by allowing myself to be drawn into a correspondence with him at all? Or was it the other way around?
