Thanks to 'The Mysteries of Udolpho' the journey flew by. I know we stopped for a very good lunch at an inn somewhere, but paid little attention. I could think of nothing but my book, and Lord Hardley indulged me by not trying to make conversation. Eventually though, he reached out and took it from me. I protested.
'I admit, m'dear, that it's succeeded in keeping you quiet even better than I'd hoped, but we are coming up to the village now, and it will not do to have your head in the clouds and your nose in a book. You must be prepared to smile and wave to the villagers. You may finish it later.'
