In the morning, the last week seemed a dream, for it was Bridget who drew back my curtains and placed my chocolate by the bed. However, I was certainly not back in my room at home, so it could not be. Yet the feeling persisted as she laid out a sprigged muslin gown that was a particular favourite of mine. Her manner was so completely normal I had to fight down a desire to laugh. I knew if I did it would come out hysterically. I said instead: 'It's nice to have you back, Bridget.'
'Thank you, my lady.'
'I expect you're a little surprised about everything?'
'A little, my lady, I can't deny it. But I hope you will be very happy. And, if you'll forgive me, I never did like that Mr Brand.'
'Lucas?' I asked sharply....
