Miami was such a weird, superficial place, and away from Jamie, I wasn’t comfortable in my skin. And Jamie was young and athletic and in a city, a beautiful city filled with attractive women and attractive people and attractive temptation, and there were days I wondered, what would he choose, and why did he choose me? He always told me not to ask why, and he would never directly answer, either. But he would always say to me, “You don’t need to be so insecure. Just be you. That’s why.”

“But you could have your pick of anything,” I would answer him.

And again, he would always say the same thing.

“Come on, Lis. I’m just a simple guy from a small town in Alberta that nobody’s ever heard of.”
