Captain’s log, 23 February 2158.

We’ve received news from home, and it isn’t good. We’re heading back to Cyrna on an emergency mission.

Someone had left the Jackal alone with two guards and a chamber pot.

They had been bound to get lazy at some point. The Jackal had been in jail for two months, broken up only by a recital of charges and a referral of process. With that long having passed with no significant incidents, even the gaolers were growing comfortable. They had been warned not to do that, of course, but one could hardly change human nature.

His first stroke of good luck had occurred when his case was referred to the Leader. That meant that instead of having a normal trial, the Jackal would wait until the evidence against him had been review...
