from Kurt pledging his allegiance to them as much as the Meat Puppets did. This included Cris and Curt Kirkwood joining Nirvana on stage to cover three of their songs during MTV Unplugged. This cow punk outfit were a really cool amalgamation of punk, folk, country and psychedelia. Amalgamation of Cool – band name? BAND NAME! 

2. Pixies

As already mentioned, Kurt confessed to trying to write a Pixies song when he wrote “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. The Pixies perfected the loud / soft dynamic which became a grunge rock trademark. The Pixies’ 1989 album Doolittle is one of my personal all time faves, even though both Kurt and your mom prefer their 1988 full length debut Surfer Rosa.
