Pamela: Tell me about school in the camps
Aiko: School was pretty basic. Sometimes it gave the feeling of normal. Other times the classroom was so hot we’d have to sit outside. But even then we couldn’t spread out. We’d have to sit close together alongside the building to stay in the shade. The dust would get up our skirts.
Pamela: You were in high school, right?
Pamela: Was there a separate building for the high school?
Aiko: Yes and no. At first, school was taught in several buildings around the camp. Mainly block 8H. Then, after a couple years, they constructed a new high school. It was very controversial at the time. The middle schoolers shared the space with us.
